Gonzalez Hurls Complete Game to Help 'Cats Complete Weekend Sweep

TROY, NY - Tri-City ValeyCats right-handed pitcher Joey Gonzalez tossed a complete game shutout in this afternoon's 8-0 home win vs. the Empire State Greys. He permitted just three hits and struck nine to help the 'Cats complete the weekend sweep. Empire State, which did not get its first hit until the sixth, only managed to send 30 batters, just three over the minimum, to the plate. Gonzalez (Win, 8-1) currently leads the Frontier League with 115 strikeouts and is tied for second on the circuit with eight victories. The righty sits fifth in the league with a 3.26 ERA.

After getting a run in the first and third inning, the ValleyCats broke the game open with a five-run fourth. Catcher Austin Elder, fresh off the delivering a walk-off win last night, had the big hit of the rally, clearing the fence in right with the bases loaded for a grand slam.

Second baseman Brantley Bell, the league leader in batting average, extended his hitting streak to 26 games, with a solo homer. Shortstop Cito Culver went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while third baseman Pavin Parks recorded a pair of RBI in the win.

Tri-City, winners of 15 of its last 20 games, including 7-3 in its last ten games, is off Monday and Tuesday. The ValleyCats begin the second half of the six-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader vs. the Ottawa Titans.
