'Cats Take Both Ends of Doubleheader at Ottawa
OTTAWA, Ontario, Canada - The Tri-City ValleyCats arrived in Ottawa on Tuesday for a key divisional matchup with the Ottawa Titans as the 2022 Frontier League regular season nears its conclusion. The two teams would square off in a doubleheader, making up a previously scheduled game postponed due to weather at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on August 18th.
The 'Cats (49-35), currently in second place in the East Division and looking to earn a playoff spot, took the opener 6-1.
Tri-City used the home run to great effect in the first game. Five of the 'Cats six runs came via the longball.
First baseman Brad Zunica put Tri-City up 4-0 with a grand slam in the third. Shortstop Cito Culver added to the lead with solo homer in the fourth, while second baseman Brantley Bell, the Frontier League leader in hitting, capped a 4-for-4 performance with a sixth-inning RBI single.
Tri-City, capped the twin-bill sweep with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.
After Ottawa, one of the teams chasing the 'Cats for a playoff berth, scored its run in the bottom of the first, the ValleyCats answered with three runs in both the third and fourth frames. Bell and third baseman Pavin Parks each had RBI doubles during the rallies.
Left-hander Ryan Williamson pitched six innings of four-hit ball to garner the win. He struck out four and just allowed one run.
Culver registered two hits in both ends of the doubleheader, finishing the day 4-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Bell went 5-for-8 with two runs scored and two RBI across the sweep.
Centerfielder Kai Moody recorded three hits to pace the Titans.
The teams continue their series tomorrow at 6:30 pm.
The 'Cats, in the midst of a ten-game road trip, return home on Tuesday, August 30 to host the Sussex County Miners. The 6:30 pm contest will begin a six-game homestand that closes the regular season.
