Phipps Named Frontier League Player of the Week
TROY, NY - The Frontier League of Professional Baseball has named Tri-City ValleyCats outfielder/designated hitter Denis Phipps the Frontier League Player of the Week for the week of August 15-21, 2022
The 37-year-old Phipps helped the 'Cats slug their way to a 4-1 record this week in divisional matchups against the Ottawa Titans and the Trois-Rivières Aigles. He tallied a .375 batting average, 1.125 slugging percentage, .429 on base percentage, four homers, five runs scored and 11 RBI across the five games. The former Cincinnati Red, who tops the circuit in homers and RBI, now has 32 home runs and 86 RBI on the season. He is just four away from equaling the league single-season record of 36 (Morgan Burkhart, Richmond, 1998).
The slugger, just the third player in franchise history to take home the weekly award, has been an integral part of the team's late season playoff push. Tri-City, which began the day in second place in the East Division, begins a four-game series at the Ottawa Titans on Tuesday. The teams, sitting just half a game apart at the close of Sunday's slate of action, renew pleasantries with a 5:30 pm doubleheader.
The ValleyCats return home on Tuesday, August 30 vs. the Sussex County Miners. The 6:30 pm contest, which will commence a six-game homestand, marks the return of Bark in the Park. Purchase your tickets by calling (518) 629-2287, going online, or stopping by the box office.
