ValleyCats Drop Series Opener to Jackals
TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats (27-20) fell 8-4 to the New Jersey Jackals (18-28) on Friday at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The ‘Cats hosted the largest crowd of the season at 5,362 fans.
New Jersey opened the scoring with a four-run first. Arbert Cipion capped the frame with a two-run single.
Tri-City fought back in the home half of the first. Francis Ferguson plunked Amani Larry and stole second. Oscar Campos then doubled in a run, and Josh Leslie was hit by a pitch. Jake Reinisch followed suit with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Bryson Parks homered in the second off Cam Jones to give the Jackals a 5-2 advantage.
Tri-City tacked on a run in the third. Javeyan Williams walked, stole second, and moved to third on an error from Jimmy Costin. Leslie lifted a sac fly to make it a 5-3 contest.
New Jersey countered in the fourth. Trevor Sheehan doubled off Wes Albert. Patrick Sanchez laid down a sac bunt. Bryson Parks lifted a sac fly to pull the Jackals ahead, 6-3.
Cipion singled in the fifth and Costin picked up a ground-rule double. Miguel Gomez doubled in two runs to make it an 8-3 game.
Larry picked up a two-out single in the seventh. Gabriel Cotto walked Williams, and Leslie singled to load the bases. Campos had an RBI hit by pitch to make it an 8-4 affair.
Ferguson (2-3) earned the win. He tossed 6.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned on four hits, walking three, and striking out four.
Jones (0-2) received the loss. He pitched 1.1 innings, striking out one.
Tri-City looks to take the middle game against New Jersey tomorrow, Saturday, July 5th. First pitch is scheduled for a 6:30 PM start.
