The Tri-City ValleyCats officially filled out the rest of its on-field coaching staff this week in the latest “Building the Roster Update,” presented by Curtis Lumber.

The staff will be led by returning Manager Greg Tagert whose contract was extended through the 2028 season this winter. Tagert has a 115-75 record in Tri-City and is coming off a 62-34 regular season, which included a single-season franchise record number of wins and the team’s first Frontier League postseason series victory. It was the second consecutive year the ‘Cats made the playoffs. Overall, he has a 1430-1258 record (.532 win percentage) across 30 seasons as a manager in professional baseball, including 11 years in the Frontier League.

Tom Thornton returns for his third season as the ‘Cats Pitching Coach. A Notre Dame University, Detroit Tigers organization, New York-Penn League, and Frontier League alum, Thornton (and Tagert) oversaw the development of RHP Nick DeCarlo (Milwaukee) and C Miguel Useche (Chicago-NL), who were both signed by major league organizations last season. The ValleyCats' pitching staff was one of the best in the Frontier League in 2025 under Thornton’s direction, finishing with a league fourth-best 4.11 ERA overall.

JJ Brock will be the team’s new Hitting Coach. Brock was most recently the head coach at Bloomfield College and has coached or worked with Georgetown University, the University of Toledo, and USA Baseball throughout a 25-year coaching career. During his playing career, Brock was a 2-year captain at the University of Notre Dame and was a First Team All-Big East shortstop and MVP. He played professionally in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, reaching Double-A El Paso, before switching to coaching.

Anthony Markle will be the ValleyCats Third Base and Assistant Hitting Coach. He played college baseball at Allegany Community College (Maryland), helping the team reach the Division II JUCO World Series in 2006. He went on to be the bullpen catcher for the Williamsport Crosscutters during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He has coached top high school talent throughout Florida over the past few years, was an assistant with the Crosscutters in 2023, and was the hitting and defensive coach for the traveling Empire State Greys during the 2022 Frontier League season.

Adrian "AD" Morales will be the team’s First Base and Fundamentals Coach. Currently an assistant with the Dallas College Cedar Valley Suns, he is also the founder and head trainer of Amplified Distance Sports and Fitness in Texas, which is in-season and off-season strength and conditioning program for athletes competing in multiple sports, specializing in baseball.
