ValleyCats Roll to Series Opening Win
The Tri-City ValleyCats (7-13) opened a six-game homestand with a 12-4 win over Sussex County (6-14) on June 2 in front of 1,786 fans.
Tri-City - which has won four of its last five - broke things open with back-to-back five-run rallies in the bottom of the seventh and eighth.
David Glancy hit a grand slam for his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the seventh, the ValleyCats sent 11 batters to the plate.
Dylan Broderick (2-for-5, R, RBI, SB) drove in pinch runner RJ Stinson with a single, a wild pitch and an error brought in two more, Amani Larry (3-for-5, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB) singled in Parker Coddou, and Ian Walters (3-for-5, R, 2 RBI) singled in Larry.
The ValleyCats, second in the Frontier League in stolen bases coming into the night, were active on the base paths again with six steals, while being caught just once.
The offense supported a 6.1 inning start from Gino Sabatine, his longest of the season, as he scattered six hits, struck out two, and allowed just one earned run. Newcomer and Skidmore College graduate Quinn Hocom won his season and professional debut for the ValleyCats and struck out three and walked two in 1.1 innings of relief. Nate Nabholz came on for his second save with 1.1 innings of hitless relief as he struck out two.
Kiko Romero lifted a two-run homer in the top of the eighth for Sussex County. Rob Hensey went 6.1 innings for the visitors, giving up seven hits, five runs (four earned), and walking two, but striking out eight. The Miners committed six errors in the loss.
Tri-City and Sussex County are slated for back-to-back morning games on the June 3 and June 4 Education Days presented by Transfinder. First pitches are scheduled for 10 a.m.
