ValleyCats Rally Falls Short as Trois-Riviers Takes Series Opener, 6-4
The Tri-City ValleyCats mounted a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth punctuated by a two-run Jake Reinisch triple and an Ian Walters RBI single, but came up short against Trois-Riviers, 6-4, in front of 1,803 human fans and dozens of four-legged friends on Mental Health Awareness Night presented by the New York State Office of Mental Health and Bark in the Park presented by Benson's Pet Center on May 19.
The rally broke the ValleyCats (2-8) out of an offensive slump after they scored just twice in the previous 17 innings.
Walters, Brayden Jobert, and Josh Leslie all went 2-for-4 for Tri-City. Dylan Broderick tripled in the bottom of the eighth and scored on a Reinisch groundout.
Gino Sabatine went five innings in the start for Tri-City, giving up four runs on seven hits. Mason Martinex allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in four innings of relief. The ValleyCats turned three double plays on defense.
The Aigles (4-6) were led by third baseman John Montes, who was 3-for-4 with two home runs. Noe Toribio threw six scoreless innings in the start, walking two and striking out two.
Despite the ValleyCats sixth loss in a row, the day was highlighted by the news that the team announced the transfer of starting pitcher Stephen Still’s contract to the Baltimore Orioles. Still led the Frontier League in strikeouts, 18, through his first 11 innings over two starts to start the 2026 season. Using an arsenal of a four-seam fastball, sweeper, curve, and change-up, Still threw a six-inning, two-hit, 11-strikeout gem for Tri-City as the ValleyCats topped New Jersey, 7-1, in the 2026 season opener on May 8.
The ValleyCats are back in action early on Wednesday with the first of back-to-back Education Days presented by Transfinder.
