Tri-City Outhits, Falls to Brockton
Despite outhitting the visitors, the Tri-City ValleyCats fell to the Brockton Rox, 11-8, in front of 2,433 fans on STEM, E-Sports, and Drone Show Night at The Joe on May 22.
Ranko Stevanovic (2-for-4) hit a two-run homer for the 'Cats (3-10) in the bottom of the fifth, and Brayden Jobert was 3-for-5 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored as the ValleyCats put up 12 hits to Brockton's nine and seven unanswered runs mid-game, but fell short of completing the full comeback.
Tri-City's best inning was the bottom of the third when Ian Walters' single scored Jobert and Dylan Broderick (2-for-5). David Glancy's groundout then scored Amani Larry, and Jake Reinisch (2-for-4, 2 RBI) upped his hitting streak to four games since returning to the lineup earlier this week with an RBI single to cap the four-run rally.
Brayhans Barreto (0-2, 9.75 ERA) struck out two, but walked six and allowed eight runs in the three-inning start for Tri-City. Luke Delongchamp threw three innings of no-hit relief, striking out five for the ValleyCats. Michael Riley struck out three in three innings to finish.
Brockton (3-10) built an 8-0 lead in its first two at-bats, highlighted by a Derek Bender (2-for-4, 2R, BB, HR) grand slam in the top of the first and a Hayden Travinski two-run homer in the top of the second. Austin White and Evan Slight both went 2-for-5 for the Rox.
Zach Eldred (2-0, 7.02 ERA) picked up the pitching win as he struck out five over six innings. Brendan O'Donnell earned his third save of the season.
Both teams return for the second game of the series tomorrow at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Kids in Free night presented by Next Step FCU, with postgame fireworks presented by Upstate New York Toyota. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
