ValleyCats Take Marathon at Mississippi, 10-7
The Tri-City ValleyCats (5-12) topped the Mississippi Mud Monsters, 10-7, in an 3 hour, 43 minute marathon on Friday, May 29. It was the longest ValleyCats game of the season.
The ValleyCats finally pulled away in the top of the ninth on a bases loaded walk to David Glancy and a two-run double by Ian Walters.
The basepaths were busy all day on Friday with 19 total hits and 41 total runners (13 ValleyCats walks and one hit by pitch, six Mud Monsters walks and two hit by pitches). Plus, the ValleyCats stole eight bases (one caught) while the Mud Monsters (8-11) stole four (three caught) along with three Mississippi wild pitches.
The ValleyCats came all the way back from a six-run deficit and tied things in the top of the eighth after a Glancy triple scored Parker Coddou and Glancy then scored on a Walters sacrifice fly.
Coddou (1-for-3, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 SB) drove in Aaron Whitley with a single in the top of the sixth. Kai Moody (2-for-6) ripped a two-run double to deep left center and then came home on a Jake Reinisch (2-for-5) single in the three-run fifth.
Dylan Broderick (1-for-4, 2 R, 2 BB) also tripled off the right-center fence in the top of third for the ValleyCats. He scored on a Jackson Smith wild pitch. The ValleyCats lead the Frontier League in three-baggers with nine this season.
Luke Delongchamp went three innings in the start for Tri-City striking out one and giving up six hits and two walks. Mason Martinez came on for 3.1 innings of relief before Logan Jones had 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Nate Nabholz picked up his second save of the season with two strikeouts in the ninth.
Mississippi - which scored all of its runs in the bottom of the second, third, and fourth - put together a four-run rally in the bottom of the fourth that was punctuated by a two-run Kyle Booker double. Kasten Furr was 2-for-3 with two walks in the loss.
The Mud Monsters used six pitchers in total as starter Jackson Smith went four innings with three walks, three strikeouts, two hits, and one earned run.
Tri-City finishes up the southern swing with a double header on Saturday before returning to The Joe on Tuesday for Workforce Development Night presented by Ferguson, Paylocity, and Human Interest. The event is also supported by the Capital Region Workforce Development Board.
